What is Coaching ?

This is what the International Coach Federation has to say about coaching:

Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

And this is what Fortune magazine had to say in its February 2000 issue:

"Coaches can help people to come to grip with huge changes in the way we do work, in getting through big transitions."

"Workers at all levels of the corporate ladder .... are .... enlisting coaches for guidance on how to improve their performance, boost their profits, and make better decisions about everything from personnel to strategy."

"Coaching ... bridges the growing chasm between what managers are being asked to do and what they have been trained to do.  It is almost like the difference between generals in peacetime and generals in war ..."

Critically, coaching - in contrast to many other personal development tools - delves in to the WHO you are and what aligns with you; WHAT the possible options are ; and , importantly - through challenging and accountability - HOW you are going to get there and implement your solution(s). Other approaches do not address all three of those ‘inquiries’.  Most significantly, they do not all support the client to see a new found awareness or solution through to a meaningful and successful outcome. Coaching does.
